Abstract:

Extensions of the previously recorded distribution ranges of five rare bat species in South Africa are reported: Rhinolophus swinnyi (family Rhinolophidae), Kerivoula argentata, Myotis bocagei, Glauconycteris variegatus and Scotoecus albofuscus (family Vespertilionidae). In the case of three of the vespertilionid species which are associated with moist savanna and woodland/forest habitats elsewhere in Africa, new collecting records indicate southward extensions (and biogeographic continuity) along the coastal forest-grassland vegetation mosaic of eastern KwaZulu-Natal. IUCN Red List categories are discussed for each of the five species at the national and international levels in the light of the new data.
