Abstract:

This paper reports the unprecedented occurrence of the unusual vespertilionid bat, Mimetillus moloneyi thomasi, in southern Africa. This discovery is vouched for by a single specimen (previously misidentified as Scotoecus albofuscus) from Zinave National Park in southern Mozambique. This specimen greatly extends the range from northern Zambia and southeast Tanzania, and is a significant record for southern Africa, let alone Mozambique. In addition, a significant range extension of Mimetillus into eastern Zambia is reported for the Luangwa valley. The morphology of these new specimens is compared against available material, and the taxonomy of Mimetillus is discussed.
