Cytogenetic classification of some common bats from Egypt

Abstract:

The present work presents an attempt to use cytogenetic studies as a new parameter for the classification of some local common bats. Chromosomal and sperm morphology studies were carried out for 9 bat species, which belong to 6 families of the two suborders Megachiroptera and Microchiroptera (order Chiroptera). The investigated bat species were Rousettus aegyptiacus (Pteropodidae), Taphozous perforatus&Taphozous nudiventris (Emballonuridae), Nycteris thebaica (Nycteridae), Rhinopoma microphyllum&Rhinopoma hardwickei (Rhinopomatidae), Pipistrellus kuhli&Pipistrellus rueppellii (Vespertilionidae), and Rhinolophus clivosus (Rhinolophidae). In addition, differential leucocytic count and neutrophil nuclear dimorphism were carried out on the studied bat species. It is concluded from this study that the bat species of the same family (except Vespertilionidae) have nearly the same chromosomal and sperm morphological characteristics.
