Abstract:

As a consequence of the recent capture of three bats in the Cape Verde Islands as well as of the study of the Chiroptera specimens from this part of the world which are present in the collections of the Natural History Museums of Florence, Genoa, London and Paris, sixteen specimens of bats have been identified, belonging to five different species: Taphozous nudiventris (4 specimens from São Tiago and 2 from Maio), Pipistrellus savii (4 specimens from Fogo and 2 from São Vicente), Plecotus austriacus (1 specimen from Maio), Pipistrellus kuhli (1 specimen from São Vicente), Miniopterus schreibersi (2 specimens from Santo Antäo). The last two species are new for the archipelago. The geographical, geological, climatic, ecological and historical aspects of the islands are also briefly considered.
