Abstract:

The Seychelles fruit bat, Pteropus seychellensis seychellensis Milne Edwards 1877 (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae) is confined to the granitic islands of the Seychelles archipelago where it has traditionally been taken for food. Little information on the abundance of fruit bats or the effects of human activities on their populations is available (Racey, 1979). An expedition from Aberdeen university in 1977, one of the aims of which was to evaluate the need for conservation of the endemic mammals of the Seychelles Islands, included a survey of bat roosts on some of the islands.
